Description
A pewter plate (American, c. 1790) made by David Melville (1755-1793) of Newport, RI. The circular plate is marked on the back with David Melville’s rare oval boar mark (also sometimes identified as a porcupine). Surrounding the mark are the words "MELVILLE" and "NEWPORT." Below this are four square hallmarks, the first contains the initials "DM", the second an anchor with four stars, the third contains a hanging sheep, and the fourth a rosette.
