Description
A pewter plate (American, c. 1790) made by David Melville (1755-1793) of Newport, RI. The reverse of the circular plate is impressed with two of David Melville’s touch marks, they read "MADE IN NEWPORT / BY D : MELVILLE" above a five-lobed shell form above a field of thirteen stars. Below this are four square hallmarks, the first contains the initials "DM", the second an anchor with four stars, the third contains a hanging sheep, and the fourth a rosette.
