Description
A William and Mary gold stumpwork and velvet jewel box (English, late 17th century) of rectangular form with a hinged lid. The lid is slightly arched and topped by a central brass bail handle that is attached with flower-head mounts. The front of the box is fitted with a brass key escutcheon. The exterior is covered in red velvet and appliqués of gold threaded stumpwork in floral forms. The interior is lined with red satin. The jewel box is said to have belonged to Mrs. William Hunter (née Mary Robinson of NY), wife of Senator William Hunter.
