Description
A tile (English, 1873-1918) made by Mintons China Works, Stoke-on-Trent. The tile is hand painted with the nursery rhyme scene of Miss Muffet. It is inscribed in red on the top left corner “Little Miss Muffet / Sat on a tuffet”, at center a young girl sits on a grassy mound with a bowl of food on her lap while a spider creeps up behind her, a tree stands in the background right. The tile is marked in raised relief on the reverse “MINTONS / CHINA WORKS / STOKE ON TRENT”, written over this in pencil is “Vilar” (or possibly “Vilas”) and what appears to be the number “9.”
