Description
A partial tea service (English, c. 1871) produced by Josiah Wedgwood & Sons and retailed by Richard Briggs & Co., Boston. The service is a reproduction of one brought over on the Mayflower. The pieces are decorated with maroon floral sprigs and bands of maroon and gilt against a cream ground. The lidded teapot and canister are topped with raised flower finials. The teapot is inscribed in maroon on the underside “THE ELDER BREWSTER TEA POT / The Original was brought to / AMERICA / In ye / MAYFLOWER A.D. 1620 / And has been exactly copied and / Reproduced / By / RICHARD BRIGGS BOSTON / From Ye Ceramic Collection Of Gov. Lyon 1871”, it is also stamped “WEDGWOOD” and hand marked “A104” over a star shape.
