Description
A two-handled covered cup (Irish, c. 1740) made by Robert Calderwood (active 1727-1765). The removable lid is decorated with trailing leaves and topped by an incised pineapple finial. The cup is of urn-form with two leaf-capped scroll handles. The body is engraved on one side with a crest of three scallop shells on a cartouche surrounded by stylized foliage, on the other it is engraved with a heraldic lion/dog, to the left of this it is stamped with “RC” in an oblong punch, a Hibernia duty mark, and a crowned harp (Dublin assay office mark). Coming up from the base of the body are raised leaves. The whole stands on a pedestal foot with foliate and shell designs.
