Description
A set of four plates (French, Limoges, c. 1907) made by William Guérin & Co. and retailed by Ovington Bros. Co., New York. They are painted at center with differing floral bouquets against a white ground. This central reserve is surrounded by a gilt band. The rims are divided into six equal sections by gilt scroll edged panels enclosing paired bouquets. The plates have a shaped gilt edge. On the reverse they are marked in green “LIMOGES / W. G. / & Co / FRANCE” and in gold “Wm. GUÉRIN & Co / FRANCE / LIMOGES / FOR / OVINGTON BROS. Co.”
Limoges became the French center of porcelain production after 1769 when the mineral deposits of kaolin were discovered approximately 40 kilometers to its south. William Guérin (1838-1912) began his career in 1836 and became "W. Guérin & Cie" after his sons, William and Andre, joined him in 1903.
