Description
A Japanese Satsuma pottery incense burner (Japanese, c. 1890) with a removable pierced lid. The lid is topped with the figure of a seated scholar holding a staff in one hand, the body is of cylindrical form, and the whole rests on a coiled dragon base raised on three short shaped feet. Executed in enamels throughout, the sides of the burner are decorated with four panels: a) two Rakan and a monkey servant, b) Queen Mother of the West with two servants, c) a sage with boy and demon servants, d) scholars with two boy servants. The lid and base are decorated with floral designs.
