Description
A pair of Chinese export reticulated plates (Chinese, c. 1790) from the Ker (or Carr) with Martin in pretence service. The pair of matching plates have a pierced basketwork pattern rim and an outer edge painted with a simple gilt wave border. In the central medallion, painted in famille-rose enamels, the allegorical figure of Hope sits on a rocky shoreline holding an anchor under her right arm and leans on a shield which bears the coat of arms of Ker with Martin in pretence. The central medallion is bordered by a band of small gilt beads and a meandering husk chain surrounded by four anchors and ornamental pendants.
The ‘Ker with Martin in pretence’ service is believed to have been created for the marriage of Jane Martin, the daughter of Ellis Martin and Elizabeth Ker, and her cousin William Ker of Gateshaw Roxburghshire around 1790. Other plates from this service have a rim painted with panels representing the four continents.
