"Duchess of Devonshire"

late 19th Century

A Royal Vienna style portrait/cabinet plate entitled “Duchess of Devonshire” (Austrian or German, late 19th century) signed Wagner. The plate is painted at center with a bust portrait of Georgina, Duchess of Devonshire, after the 1785-1787 portrait by Thomas Gainsborough (English, 1727-1788). The plate is signed “Wagner” just below the ribbon on the Duchess’s bodice on the lower right. The rim is decorated with a gold floral band surrounded by a turquoise bead trim. On the reverse the plate is marked in red script “7867 / Dchs. Of Devonshire / Germany” and in under-glaze blue with a 3 zoned shield mark.
