Description
A carved oak extending dining table (French, late 19th century) from the workshops of Jules Allard and Sons for use in the Dining Room at The Breakers. The rectangular quartered top is outlined with broad banding of lemonwood between bandings of purpleheart and has a molded edge. Below the edge of the table top is an ovolo frieze with carved fruiting foliage. The table is supported by massive end supports in the form of back to back figures flanking a gadrooned baluster column highlighted with gilding, below is a swag of fruiting foliage held in the mouth of two lion masks, the end supports end in trestle feet. A center stretcher supports a large bulbous baluster column with gilded leaves around the base. Together with seven extra leaves the table extends to sit 34 people.
