Description
A carved Venetian gilt-wood armchair (Italian, c. 1770) with a padded back and rectangular padded seat upholstered in later red velvet. The tall rectangular back flares out toward the top and has a molded crest rail carved with scrolling foliage and an escutcheon at center with the crest of the Franciscan Order (a crucifix with two arms extended across the lower part). The molded down-swept arms end in foliate scrolls and rest on four sided columnar supports. The seat rail is decorated with lambrequins carved with foliate forms. The chair stands on four tapered paneled legs carved with pendant foliage. The legs are joined by a shaped and molded X-form stretcher with a raised spray of leaves at center.
