Description
A carved Venetian gilt-wood armchair (Italian, mid-18th century) with a padded back and rectangular stuff-over seat upholstered in modern red velvet. The tall, shaped back is surmounted by an elaborate pierced and carved crest rail flanked by C-scrolls, lambrequins, and a stylized curled leaf motif above a winged cherub head at center. The frame leading to the armrests is carved with flowers and foliage. The molded armrests end in scrolls on shaped supports. The seat rail is carved with a shaped lambrequin apron. The chair is supported on four scrolled cabriole legs ending in bun feet. The legs are joined by scrolled cruciform stretchers with four raised finials and a central urn shaped finial.
