Description
A Louis XVI style carved and painted wood bedstead (American, late 19th century) designed by Ogden Codman, Jr. (American, 1863-1951) and attributed to the manufacturer A. H. Davenport Co., Boston and East Cambridge, MA. The arched headboard is topped by a pierced floral wreath crest at center, below this the edge is decorated with a spiral ribbon molding, a carved leaf band, and a beaded band. The block fluted uprights are surmounted by shrub like finials, carved at the top and bottom corners are flowerhead paterae, above the lower paterae are acanthus leaves and pendant foliage. The squat tapered fluted legs end in cylindrical feet. The footboard is similarly designed. The headboard and footboard are upholstered in reproduction fabric copied from the original 1895 wall hangings installed in Gertrude Vanderbilt’s bedroom on the 2nd floor of The Breakers.
