Description
A six-piece bedroom suite (American, late 19th century) designed by Ogden Codman, Jr. (American, 1863-1951) and attributed to the manufacturer A. H. Davenport Co., Boston and East Cambridge, MA. The set is painted pale green with the moldings and carvings painted ivory/cream. The set is composed of:
.1a-c= A three-quarter bed, with a head and foot board of unequal height, each with a chapeau de gendarme top rail. The top of the headboard is crested by a floral wreath with acorns and oakleaves flanking and at center. The head and foot board both have shaped panels and are surmounted on their block ends with shrub like finials. The shaped siderails are carved at center with vases/baskets filled with floral bouquets. The bed is raised on four short cabriole legs that are carved on the front with acanthus leaves, trailing bell flowers, and curved foliate toes.
.2= A chest of drawers with a mottled green/grey marble top with outset square corners. Below the top are two long drawers with paneled fronts. Each drawer is fitted with two ormolu drop handles. The shaped apron is carved with scrolling foliage and bell flowers. The whole is supported by four cabriole legs carved at the knees with leaves followed by trailing bell flowers and ending in curved foliate toes.
.3-.4= A pair of bedside cupboards of square form. Each has a mottled green/grey marble top, below this is a paneled frieze drawer and a central cupboard door, each has a gilt metal foliate knob pull. The chamfered corners are carved with pendant foliage. The shaped aprons are carved at center with scrolling leaves surrounded by an arch of flowers and foliage. They are raised on four cabriole legs carved at the knees with leaves followed by trailing bell flowers and ending in curved foliate toes.
.5= A side table of rectangular form with outset square corners. It has a single paneled long drawer with two drop handles. The whole is raised on four cabriole legs carved at the knees with leaves followed by trailing bell flowers and ending in curved foliate toes.
.6= A rectangular wall mirror with a shaped top and molded frame. It is carved at the top with a cresting of floral sprays, curling leaves, and a wreath of bell flowers. The corners of the frame are carved with curling leaves and the sides with pendant flowers. The shaped bottom is carved with a border of scrolling leaves and a central flower filled basket.
