Description
A leather trimmed wardrobe trunk (French, late 19th century) made by Louis Vuitton Co. (French, founded 1854). The trunk has an elaborate compartmented interior fitted with drawers, hangers, and a removable valise. The exterior is patterned with the iconic LV monogram. The trunk is painted at center with a red, white, and blue stripe. The side of the trunk is marked with the initials “A. C.” and bears a luggage stamp for the Sherry-Netherland hotel.
Located at 781 Fifth Avenue, the Sherry-Netherland opened in 1927. At the time of its construction the Cornelius Vanderbilt II House, located nearby at 1 West 57th Street, was being demolished. Some architectural elements from the Cornelius Vanderbilt House were rescued from the mansion and installed in the Sherry-Netherland.
