Description
A sculpture bust of Mercury (English, late 19th century) composed of black basalt and produced by Wedgwood. The design of the bust is modeled after Jean-Baptiste Pigalle’s “Mercury Tying his Sandal” in the collection of the Louvre. The god is depicted looking to the right and wears a winged helmet with curly hair protruding from beneath. The bust is raised on a circular socle base. On the reverse the sculpture is stamped “WEDGWOOD.”
