Description
A nine-piece Louis XVI style chair suite (American, late 19th century) designed by Ogden Codman, Jr. (American, 1863-1951) and attributed to the manufacturer A. H. Davenport Co., Boston and East Cambridge, MA. All the pieces in the suite have white painted frames. The suite is composed of:
.1= An armchair with an oval back and molded frame topped with a carved bowknot, padded open armrests with scrolled foliate ends on curved molded supports, curved stiles carved with leaves, a seat with a molded rim, the whole is supported by four tapered fluted legs topped by carved block flower-head medallions along the seat rail. The back, armrests, and seat are upholstered in yellow and beige striped fabric with a small pattern of flowering vines.
.2ab-.3ab= A pair of bergères with an arched back and molded frame topped with a carved bowknot, closed padded armrests with scrolled foliate ends on curved molded supports, matching loos cushions, and four tapered fluted legs topped by carved block flower-head medallions along the seat rail. The back, armrests, seat, and cushions are upholstered in yellow and beige striped fabric with a small pattern of flowering vines.
4,.6,.9= Three side chairs with an oval caned back and molded frame surmounted by a carved bow knot, curved stiles carved with leaves, a caned seat with a molded rim, and four tapered fluted legs topped by carved block flower-head medallions along the seat rail.
.5= A chaise lounge with an arched back surmounted by a carved bowknot, the tall foot is of oval outline, both the back and foot have closed padded armrests with scrolled foliate ends on curved molded supports, the whole is supported by eight tapered fluted legs, the center legs are topped by carved block flower-head medallions along the seat rail. The back, closed armrests, and seat are upholstered in the same fabric as the other pieces in the suite.
.7= A circular stool with a stuff-over seat upholstered in the same fabric as the other pieces in the suite. The stool stands on four tapered fluted legs topped by carved block flower-head medallions along the seat rail.
.8= A writing chair with a horseshoe shaped back fitted with three panels of canework, a molded crest rail which slopes down to armrests with scrolled foliate ends on curved molded supports, a caned seat, and four tapered fluted legs topped by carved block flower-head medallions along the seat rail.
