Description
A suite of chairs (American, late 19th century) designed by Ogden Codman, Jr. (American, 1863-1951) and attributed to the manufacturer A. H. Davenport Co., Boston and East Cambridge, MA. Done in the Louis XVI style, the frames of the pieces are painted white. The suite is composed of:
.1 a-b = A caned dressing chair with a loose cushion. The horseshoe shaped back is carved with spiral ribbon molding and surmounted by a floral wreath. The foliate carved armrests connect to free standing fluted colonette supports which are carved with leaves around the bottom, these are supported by fluted block corners carved at the bottom with rosettes. The chair has a caned shaped seat and a seat rail decorated with floral guilloche molding. The chair is supported by four tapered fluted legs. The loose cushion is upholstered in floral fabric (which matches the headboard of (PSNC.2571a-c).
.2 = A circular dressing table stool raised on four tapered fluted legs with block rosettes along the seat rail. The stool seat is upholstered in floral fabric. (matches PSNC.2905.13-.14).
.3-.7 = Seven caned side chairs with arched backs carved at the corners with block rosettes, square slightly shaped seats, and four tapered fluted legs.
