Description
A green painted wicker Morris chair (American, c. 1897) made by the Wakefield Rattan Co., Wakefield, MA. Of Victorian taste, the armchair has a rectangular, ratchetted adjustable back, armrests with scrolled supports, palmetto design side panels above an apron decorated with scrolls and wooden beads. The chair stands on four squat legs connected by an X-stretcher. The back and seat have a tufted cushion upholstered in green fabric.
The design of this chair can be found on page 34 under design number 6615 of the 1897 Wakefield Rattan Company illustrated catalogue. A shellac or stain version retailed for $13.50, while an enamel and leaf or all gold leaf version retailed for $17.25.
