Description
A Louis XV style three-piece giltwood seating suite (French, ca. 1901) from the workshops of Jules Allard and Sons, Paris. Comprising a large settee, or grand canapé, (.1) and two matching bergères (.2-.3). Each with an arched crest highlighted by rocaille shell form cartouches, foliate accents, and frame centered with figural mascaron, fully upholstered scroll arms and bowed seats, a shaped seat rail with a shell flanked by acanthus plumes, raised on cabriole legs ending in scroll feet.
The suite is original to The Elms, it was sold at the 1962 auction, but returned to the house in 2016 after being acquired by The Preservation Society of Newport County. Originally upholstered en suite with the draperies of The Elms drawing room in celadon silk brocade. The suite was reupholstered around 1995 in yellow floral and vine patterned Scalamandre silk.
