Description
A suite of Louis XV style giltwood furniture (French, c. 1880) composing a canape (or sofa), twelve fauteuils a la Reine (armchairs), and a fire screen. All the pieces in the suite have Beauvais tapestry upholstery after c. 1760 French cartoons by François Boucher (French, 1703-1770) entitled "Les Nobles Pastorales" ("pastoral nobles"). Each piece has a curved frame carved in the manner of master carver Nicolas Heurtaut (French, 1720-1771) with trailing garlands issuing from central scallop shells. The seat rails are similarly carved on cabriole legs ending in scrolling toes. The backs and seats with "a chassis" (framed) upholstery with shepherds and shepherdesses in pastoral landscapes. One of the chairs has "Nov. 30/04 Duveen-No. 3 P-Boudoir Armchair" printed underneath. The tapestry coverings woven at Beauvais under the direction of Andre Charlemagne Challot. The coverings are identical to a set woven in 1763 for Simon-Claude Boulard de Gatelier now in the Louvre.
