Description
A Louis XIII/Louis XIV giltwood fauteuil (armchair) (French, late 19th century) made by Jean-Henri Jansen (1854-1928) or his Maison Jansen in Paris. The high rectangular upholstered back sits above shell, bellflower, and acanthus carved S-scroll arms raised on thick S-scroll supports. The loose cushion seat sits above an upholstered apron raised on spiral turned legs, the front legs terminate in paw feet, the rear in bun feet. The sides have spiral turned stretchers, and the front has a large acanthus-carved pierced stretcher centering on a stylized shell. The upholstered sections are covered in a 19th century red velvet accented with gold tape and hanging tassels. The seat back has a 17th century stumpwork embroidered panel in tones of red, yellow, green, and blue silk together with metallic threads centering on a coat-of-arms surrounded by scrolling foliage. The bottom seat cover is stamped "Jansen/Paris."
