Description
A Louis XIV style ormolu-mounted burl walnut and kingwood veneer wall cabinet (English, late 19th century) retailed by W. & J. Sloane, New York. The cabinet has a long rectangular mottled brown/red grey and white marble top. Below is a long drawer with ormolu balustrades flanked on either side by a short drawer decorated with ormolu leaves and a circular flowered knob pull. The outset front corners are decorated with ormolu paterae. The lower section of the cabinet has a single cupboard door that opens to the right revealing an open space. The exterior of the cupboard door is raised with a square panel. In the center of the panel is a mask. Above and below the doors are ormolu scenes of two nymphs with laurels surrounded by military trophies symbolizing the ascension of the Duc d'Arjon to the throne of France. The central cupboard is flanked by two Corinthian quarter columns with ormolu capitals. The sides have rectangular panels framed with foliate ormolu molding. Along the bottom apron are three drawers, the central drawer has an ormolu mount in the form of crossed trophies and is flanked by two shorter drawers with scrolled ormolu male masks along the inside edge. The whole is raised on four tapered spiraled ormolu feet.
