Description
A Louis XV style gold leaf maple grand piano (American, 1900-1901) made by Steinway & Sons, New York. The maple case is covered entirely in gold leaf, including the interior. The sides are decorated with trophies of musical instruments suspended from acanthus leaves and ribbons. The scalloped apron is accented with a continuous band of acanthus clad S-scrolls and C-scrolls centering on scallop shells. The whole is raised on three large S-scroll foliate carved legs headed by shells and terminating in casters. The piano’s ivory keys are covered by a hinged cover. The interior of the cover inscribed "STEINWAY & SONS / MAKERS" within a scallop shell and flanked by a pair of cherubs playing musical instruments. The interior has a hinged trellis-style music stand decorated with flowerheads, acanthus leaves, and a central cartouche.
