Description
A Louis XVI revival oak and parcel gilt dining table (French, c. 1905) from the workshops of Jules Allard & Sons, Paris. The square top has rounded corners above a fluted apron with panels of gilt wave form (Vitruvian) scrolling, the top can be fitted with two additional leaves. The four corners are decorated with gilt paterae and the whole is raised on eight legs when fully extended. The four interior fluted S-scrolled legs are accented with gilded acanthus leaves and joined by an X-shaped stretcher centering on a platform with a large gilded paterae. The bottom includes a small square shipping label inscribed "PITT & SCOTT L/PARIS" in red letters.
The dining table was originally purchased from Jules Allard & Sons of Paris for the Parisian residence of Alice Drexel (nee Alice Troth), wife of John R. Drexel I of Philadelphia, New York, and Newport.
