Description
A polychromatic marble bust depicting the Roman Emperor Caracalla (Italian, late 19th century), Caracalla served as Emperor from 211-217 A.D. This bust is likely modelled after the ancient Roman bust of Caracalla, created between 212-217 A.D., currently in the collection of the Louvre. Here Caracalla is depicted in white marble after the antique with curly hair and a beard, gazing ahead. His head is mounted on a multicolored marble and onyx torso wearing a cuirass (armor) emblazoned with a central lion mask. The whole is raised on a circular base.
Original to The Elms, the bust was intended to compliment the 18th century Venetian wall paintings representing the triumphant campaigns of the Roman general Scipio Africanus which are displayed in the dining room.
