A pair of oil on canvas panels (French, c. 1900) in the style of Dutch artist and designer Jacob de Wit (1695-1754) from the workshops of Jules Allard & Sons, Paris. The pair are installed opposite one another on the north and south walls of The Elms first floor Drawing Room. The semi-circular greyscale paintings each depict a group of four putti surrounded by leafy branches. The group of putti on the south wall (.1) clasp hands and move around in a circle. The group of putti on the north wall (.2) center around a stump and play/listen to musical instruments
Original to The Elms Drawing Room, these paintings were made by the workshops of Jules Allard & Sons of Paris to compliment ceiling canvas by Jacob de Wit. This style of painting became synonymous with the decorative panel work of Jacob de Wit and enjoyed great popularity even after the artist's death in 1754.
