Description
A pair of Louis XV style ormolu-mounted glazed bisque ("biscuit") porcelain candelabra (mounts likely French, late 19th century; porcelain Chinese from the K'ang Hsi Period, c. 1662-1722) formed by Buddhist guardian lions known as Foo Dogs holding two light candle holders. Each Foo Dog is brightly glazed in tones of green, yellow, and aubergine and raised on a rectangular "egg and spinach" pedestal. The Foo Dog facing left (.1a-e) is male, its front paw is raised to rest on a ball support which is now missing. The Foo Dog facing right (.2a-e) is female and is accompanied by a cub. From these porcelain figures emanate two ormolu curving foliate arms which terminate in leaf-form candle cups. The stepped ormolu octagonal bases are raised on circular leaf form feet.
