Description
A patinated bronze figural group entitled “La Charite” (French, c. 1890) cast by Ferdinand Barbedienne (French, 1810-1892) from a model by Paul Dubois (French, 1829-1905). The sculpture depicts a seated mother with her hair covered, wearing a simple dress, nursing two infants seated on her lap. The grouping is raised on a shaped base with “F. BARBEDIENNE Fondeur / PARIS” inscribed on the side.
This is a smaller version of the original bronze executed by Dubois to decorate one of the four corners of the Monument to the Memory of General Juchault de Lamoricière. The plaster model was exhibited at the Salon in 1876 alongside Courage Militaire, and the completed monument was displayed at the Exposition Universelle in 1878, prior to its installation in the transept of Nantes Cathedral the following year. The figure of “La Charite” appealed to the 19th century viewer and engravings of the sculpture were published in the Gazette des Beaux-Arts, The Magazine of Art, and L’Art.
