Description
A pair of lion and putti un-glazed faience statuettes (French, late 19th – early 20th century) either by or after Aimé-Jules Dalou (French, 1838-1902). The statuettes are studies for the “Lion Conduit Par un Enfant” (“Lion Led By a Child”) groupings on the left bank of the Pont Alexandre III bridge in Paris. In the first grouping (.1) a putto carrying a bundle of foliage strides alongside a lion, in the second grouping (.2) a putto drapes a floral garland around a lion. Both groupings stand on shaped oblong bases with drapery and trophies around the feet of the figures.
The Pont Alexandre III was inaugurated in 1900 for the Exposition Universelle.
