Description
A pair of porcelain figures of “The Welsh Tailor and His Wife” (English, 1820-1840) made by the Derby Porcelain Factory after the Meissen originals modeled by J.J. Kändler (German, 1706-1775) and J.F. Eberlein (German, 1695-1749).
.1 = The figure of “The Welsh Tailor’s Wife” depicts a woman sitting astride a brown and white goat. She wears a cap, a green boddice, and a printed blue and gold skirt. She holds a child in her lap with one arm and gabs the horn of the goat with the other, strapped to her back is a basket with two more infants. A kid (baby goat) stands near the rear suckling at the tete of the mother goat. The mound base is molded with shrubbery and flowers with white and gold scrollwork along the sides. The underside is marked in red with the Crown Derby mark with the letters “BL” below, it is also incised “No. 62” and “1 Size” in script.
.2= The figure of “The Welsh Tailor” depicts a man sitting astride a white and grey Billy goat. The man wears a black tricorn hat and a floral printed blue and gold coat with a pair of shears hanging from the waist. He grabs onto the goat’s horns with his left arm and holds a paddle uplifted in the other. Strapped to his back is a basket with two kids. The Billy goat holds an iron in its mouth. The mound base is molded with shrubbery and flowers with white and gold scrollwork along the sides. The underside is marked in red with the Crown Derby mark with the letters “BL” below, it is also incised “No. 62.”
