Description
A figure grouping of Rinaldo and Armida (English, c. 1780) made by the Derby Porcelain Factory. In the grouping the sleeping Rinaldo wears black boots, a white and gold uniform, and leans against a tree, his helmet, saber, and shield are scattered on the ground next to him. Armida wears a lose white gown belted at the waist, she leans over Rinaldo and drapes him with a colorful floral chain. The underside of the base is incised “76.”
The characters of Rinaldo and Armida come from Torquato Tasso’s (Italian, 1544-1595) epic poem “La Gerusalemme Liberta” (“Jerusalem Delivered”). In the poem Rinaldo, a knight in the first crusade, is abducted by the sorceress Armida, who takes him to her garden on an enchanted island. Under her spell he forgets his mission, however two of his companions find Rinaldo and show him his reflection in a polished shield breaking Armida’s enchantment.
