Description
A Louis XV style armchair (American, c. 1855) attributed to Léon Marcotte (American, born in France, 1824-1887). The armchair has a curvilinear ebonized beechwood frame. The back, armrests, and seat are upholstered in a reproduction cotton silk screen fabric by Schumacher of roses on a pale gold ground. The molded chair back is centered by a foliate ormolu mount, the open armrests stand on curved supports, the shaped seat rail and front knees are decorated with applied foliate ormolu mounts. The armchair stands on four legs, the front two are cabriole and end in scroll feet raised on casters, the cylindrical rear legs are plain and slightly splayed.
While not original to Chateau-sur-Mer, this armchair very closely resembles the armchairs in the original ballroom suite purchased by William S. Wetmore from Léon Marcotte between 1851-1854. The reproduction fabric is after pieces the original suite.
