Description
A set of three Louis XV style chairs (American, c. 1855) attributed to Léon Marcotte (American, born in France, 1824-1887). The set consists of two armchairs (.1-.2) and a side chair (.3). All have curvilinear ebonized beechwood frames. Their backs and seats are upholstered in a reproduction cotton silk screen fabric by Schumacher of roses on a pale gold ground, the padded armrests of the armchairs are also upholstered in this fabric. The molded chair backs are centered by a foliate ormolu mount, the shaped seat rail and front knees are also decorated with applied foliate ormolu mounts. The open armrests of the armchairs stand on curved supports. The chairs stand on four legs, the front two are cabriole and end in scroll feet raised on casters, the cylindrical rear legs are plain and slightly splayed.
While not original to Chateau-sur-Mer, these chairs very closely resemble those in the original ballroom suite purchased by William S. Wetmore from Léon Marcotte. The reproduction fabric is after pieces in the original suite.
