Description
A Louis XV style carved and gilded wood canapé (French, 19th century) with a curved back carved at the cresting with flowers and foliage and with molded borders descending to padded armrests on voluted supports, the back is caned. The shaped seat has a molded rail carved with flowers and foliage, there is similar decoration carved at the knees. The whole is supported by six cabriole legs ending in scroll feet. The back, padded armrests, and loose cushion are upholstered in green Schumacher damask.
The canapé is original to Chateau-sur-Mer and was possibly ordered by Ogden Codman during his redesign of the Green Salon in 1897.
