Description
A five-piece furniture suite (French, 18th century) in the provincial Louis XV style, the suite is composed of a canapé (.1), two side chairs (.2-.3), and two armchairs (.4-.5). All the pieces have carved fruitwood frames and have been reupholstered in green damask. This suite of furniture originally comes from the Newport estate Hopedene.
.1 = The canapé has a shaped back which is carved along the crest rail at center with a floral spray. The open padded armrests stand on curved supports. The shaped seat rail is carved at center with a floral spray, the front knees are carved with flower-heads, the whole is supported by four cabriole legs. The back, padded armrests, and seat are upholstered. The canapé is accompanied by three matching loose cushions.
.2-.3 = The two side chairs have cartouche-shaped backs carved along the crest rail at center with a five-petaled flower-head flanked by leaves, the shaped seat rail is carved at center with the same design, the knees are carved with rocaille foliate forms, the whole stands on four cabriole legs. The backs and seats are upholstered.
.4-.5 = Of similar design as the side chairs, the armchairs have open padded armrests raised on curved supports.
