Description
A pair of rampant lion candleholders (French, Nancy, late 19th century) designed by Emil Gallé (French, 1846-1904). Composed of faience and painted in tones of red and blue with gilding (reminiscent of the color palette used in Imari ware), each lion holds a turret candle holder in its outstretched front paws. The turret is wrapped in an armorial bearing painted with a band of birds and a thistle. Each is raised on an oblong base painted with circular Asian-inspired floral medallions. The bases are signed in red script “Gallé Nancy.”
