Description
A Japonesque style vase (English, c. 1880) produced by Minton & Company, Stoke-on-Trent, England. The flattened baluster-shaped vase with two side handles has an olive-green ground decorated with an opaque white pâte-sur-pâte wisteria flower hanging from a vine and overlay enamel circular medallions with Oriental-inspired motifs. The bamboos shoots are directly inspired by Japanese sources, and the geometric designs of the other medallion are typical of the 1880s and reflect the influence of Owen Jones and Christopher Dresser, two of the most impart designers of the period. The rim, handles, ring base, and medallions are accented in gold. The underside is impressed with “MINTONS” and “6135.”
