Description
An Art Pottery vase (French, c. 1880) produced by Appert Frères. Of globular form with a tall narrow neck the vase is fired in an oxblood flambe red over yellow glaze. It is decorated with a Japonesque style dragon in high relief wrapped around the base and neck as it tries to catch a large butterfly. The body of the vase is impressed with floral/star motifs. The asymmetrical decoration of the vase is a common feature of Aesthetic ceramics. The underside of the base is incised with the potter’s mark “AF / 891.”
