A William and Mary Armchair

c. 1690

A William and Mary armchair (English, c. 1690) with a black painted oak frame, canned back, and a square seat upholstered in old red/gold velvet. The armchair has a high arched rectangular back carved along the crest rail with decorative foliate scrolls flanking a basket of flowers, below this is an oblong caned splat flanked on either side with baluster turned back posts. The arms terminate in scrolled handles on ring-turned supports. The whole is supported by four legs, the two front legs terminate in elaborate double scroll feet accented with concave crescent cut-outs, the turned block rear legs are splayed and end in block feet. The legs are joined by a front stretcher carved with the same decoration as the crest rail, H-shaped ring and block turned stretchers, and a rear stretcher.
