Description
A Georgian open face Welsh dresser (English, 18th century) composed of oak. The upper section has an open top and a shaped cornice above three long shelves. The lower sections consists of a rectangular case containing five drawers, each with later Chippendale style brass handles, the three upper drawers have brass key escutcheons. The whole is raised on four legs, the front two are baluster shaped ending in block feet, the rear are plain block form. The legs are connected by a platform stretcher, creating a lower open shelf.
Welsh dressers were used for the display of pottery, the form was developed in Wales in the 1700s. Many were brought to America by early colonists.
