A William and Mary Armchair

c. 1690

A William and Mary armchair (English, c. 1690) with a painted black wood frame and caned seat. The pierced crest rail is carved with crescent scrollwork flanking a central leafy stem terminating in two scroll shaped buds. The open back has two elaborately carved leaf and scroll splats flanking three half balusters splats, the two ring and block turned back posts are surmounted with primitive head carved finials. The curved arms terminate in scroll (ram’s horn) handles raised on baluster supports above the square caned seat. The whole is raised on four legs, the front two are in the form of S-scrolls carved to look like curling leaves and terminate in bun feet, the splayed rear legs are block turned ending in block feet. The front legs are joined by a stretcher carved with the same design as the crest rail, all four legs are joined by H-shaped block and ring turned stretchers, and the rear legs are connected by a ring turned stretcher.
