Rococo Revival Silver Ewer

c. 1890

A rococo revival silver ewer (English, c. 1890) attributed to Richard Hodd & Son, London, and an unidentified Birmingham silver maker. The baluster-shaped ewer has an overall grapevine and grape decorative motif, its ribbed high neck has a scalloped opening, below the spout and at the base of its curved handle are figural appliqués of female satyrs eating grapes, the gadrooned body is decorated with a cast and chased scrolling foliate and bird motif, the circular footed base is decorated with shells and acanthus leaves. The neck is impressed with Birmingham silver assay marks and the underside is impressed with “R.H / R.H.” along with a lion passant silver mark. The ewer weighs 105 Troy ounces. Unoriginal to Chateau-sur-Mer, the ewer comes from the collection of Mrs. John R. Drexel (Alice Troth Drexel) and was used in her Parisian townhouse.
