Description
A large urn (Austrian, c. 1880) in the style of the Royal Vienna factory, signed R. Pohl. The urn has a removable onion dome lid topped with an acorn finial, two semi-circular high handles flank the egg-shaped body, the whole stands on a circular pedestal base. The urn is decorated with a curling foliate motif in gold leaf and enamel against a cobalt blue ground, the front of the urn is painted with a scene within an oval medallion of the goddess Diana seated next to another classically draped woman in a woodland landscape with cupid in the background. The painted scene is signed “R. Pohl” on the lower left. The handles have raised mask decorations at the top and floral medallions at the bottom. The underside is marked with a beehive/shield mark in blue underglaze.
