Description
An agateware inhaler (English, mid-19th century) manufactured by S. Maw, Son & Thompson, Aldersgate Street, London. The bulbous body has an applied curved mouthpiece, the top opening is fitted with a cork stopper and glass tube. Printed on the front in a shield shaped banner is “IMPROVED / EARTHENWARE / INHALER / MANUCAFTURED / BY / S. MAW SON & THOMPSON / ALDERSGATE ST. LONDON.” The directions for use on the opposite side read “DIRECTIONS FOR USE / For the inhalation of the vapour of Hot Water the water / should be Boiling and the Inhaler not more than half filled. / When Infusions are required the ingredients should be / placed in the Inhaler and Boiling Water poured upon them / Volatile and other liquids should be added to the Boiling Water.”
