Description
A Victorian inkstand (English, 19th century) composed of silver plate. At center is a seated figure in the form of an 18th century peasant boy who holds a grape vine aloft, this terminates in a sealing wax holder formed by an open grape leaf. The figure is flanked by two baskets filled with grapes, these open on hinged lids to reveal inkwells with cut glass liners. At the feet of the figure is a signet well. The oblong base has two handles on the side formed by two upturned tree branches. The reverse features an “open” oval cartouche for the engraving of a monogram. The underside is stamped “FJB” next to a star symbol in four separate punches.
