Description
An “Old Snifter” bottle opener (American, c. 1930) marked “Demley.” The chrome bottle opener is in the form of a tall lean figure wearing a frock coat and black top hat, the bottle opener is formed by the figure’s nose and ascot, the corkscrew folds out from the figure’s coat. Raised lettering on the base reads “OLD SNIFTER” and on the reverse it is imprinted “Demley” in an oval. The character of “Old Snifter” takes inspiration from “Mr. Dry”, Rollin Kirby’s cartoon personifying Prohibition.
Original to the bar at Ker Arvor, the former Newport residence of Col. Snowden A. Fahnestock (1886-1962).
