An oil on canvas portrait entitled “Lady in White” (American, dated 1910) by Irving Ramsey Wiles (American, 1861-1948). The subject, believed to be Mary Latham (née Gurnee) Hoppin (American, 1880-1968), is depicted seated on a garden bench against a landscaped background, she wears a pearl choker and a white silk day dress. The portrait is signed and dated on the bottom left corner.
Irving Ramsey Wiles was a leading American portrait painter at the end of the 19th and early 20th century. He studied under William Merritt Chase at the Art Students League of New York and at the Académie Julian in Paris. In 1915 Wiles was awarded a gold medal at the Panama Pacific Exposition.
