Description
A portrait entitled “Mrs. Henry O. Havemeyer (née Charlotte Whiting, 1880-1862)” (American, c. 1900) by Jacques I. Willett (American, born in Petrograd, Russia, 1882-1958). The subject, Charlotte Adelaide Green Havemeyer (American, 1880-1962), is depicted seated in an armchair with her face in profile against a dark background. She wears a white lace dress with a low neckline and pearl details, holds a folded fan in her left hand, and is adorned with a diamond bracelet, earrings, and hair pin. The canvas is signed “J. Willett” on the bottom right corner along with “AAA”, Willett was a member of the Allied Artists of America.
Charlotte Havemeyer was the wife of sugar company magnate H.O. Havemeyer (American, 1876-1965). Together the couple had four children, Carlotta Havemeyer (1901-1942) (Mrs. Anson Alexander Bigelow), H.O. Havemeyer, Jr. (1903-1992), Florence Hildegard Havemeyer (1905-1991) (Mrs. George F. Robinson), and Frederick Christian Havemeyer (1908-1969). The Havemeyers had homes in New York, Newport, New Jersey, and Florida.
